John Moore, Contemporary Jewelry without Borders

On my recent trip to London I caught up with John Moore, winner of the Goldsmiths’ Company Award for his “Lacewing Verto” necklace. I asked John to select his favourite works from the recent Collect exhibit at the Saatchi gallery. As you will see, there is very little contemporary jewelry — but John is fascinated by all sorts of disciplines.

An Interview with London Craft Week

With the upcoming London trip in partnership with London Craft Week, I sat down with them to discuss everything Rue Pigalle: how jewellery can tell a story, the careful curation of my bespoke trips and why the emotional connection with handmade objects is more important than ever.

Métiers D'Art

During our visit of the Dior exhibit at the ROM last Sunday we enjoyed discovering the craftsmanship of the métiers who are essential to creating a haute couture dress.

Dior at the ROM

I must confess that after having been wowed by the splendid Paris Dior exhibit in September, I was a little bit skeptical about what we would see at the ROM. But I was wrong. The curator, Alexandra Palmer, cleverly brought it home by scouting dresses owned by Canadian fashionistas in the early 50s—recognising household Canadian names amongst the donors makes one feel proud and involved.

London Calling: Anna and Cristóbal

Luckily for me, my London dates overlapped with two major fashion exhibitions happening in the city.  The Fashion and Textile Museum presented The World of Anna Sui, and the V&A held the much-hyped, Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion. The fashion lover in me was thrilled to be around to catch a few of the seemingly endless supply of fashion exhibitions that happen across the pond.

London Calling - My Eclectic List of Things to Do

London is terrific in the fall. The tourist crowds of summer have dissipated, making it easier to see attractions and the weather is perfect for walking around. The city’s old trees are bursting with fall colours, and the parks are stunning. I spent 14 days in London this September exploring everything it has to offer and crossing off some bucket list items. Most people were surprised at what I didn’t visit on vacation (think Buckingham Palace, London Eye, and Tower of London). Here’s my eclectic list of my top favourite things to do.

Making Fabric with bbellamy & bbellamy

I’m a real sucker for fabrics — and lampshades. They go hand in hand really, using the fabric to make lampshades. So bbellamy & bbellamy has been on my radar screen for a while. For years, vicariously only via Facebook. Until last month when I rang the bell of a dingy, almost abandoned looking store front in Muizenberg, Cape Town.
