The case for bespoke fashion
When you can pick up a dress for $80, a coat for $150 and shoes for under $200, all delivered to your home within 24 hours of the click of the mouse, why would you want to spend hundreds on bespoke pieces? What does it say about you if you can't find what you like in a store or online, considering the over abundance of choice we have?
The case for bespoke fashion is multi faceted.
A perfectly fitted garment gives an immediate mental lift and bestows incredible self confidence on the wearer - feel good about yourself and you will move mountains.
Undeniably, a bespoke garment is more expensive to puchase and requires some cashflow planning - but it will last for years - play the long game financially, it will pay off.
You are also reducing waste.
85% of our apparels end up in a landfill.
It is no secret that brands don't know where their fabrics come from or who makes them. Working with your tailor you can pick fabrics from small mills that document their supply chain, train their workers and work directly with textile designers. Don't hesitate to contact the mill directly if you are curious about their practices. Small businesses are proud of their work and traditions and eager to share it with their customers.
And if you are a little vain, there is a delicious kick knowing that no one else owns the same garment as you. That counts too.
Your tailor will help you build your wardrobe thoughtfully, each season building on the previous one, keeping in mind your budgetary priorities and your life style. Your wardrobe will become smaller over time (if you are disciplined enough to stick to the plan) but more interesting and a true reflection of who you are.
Canada has a very rich pool of bespoke designers - over the course of the year you will discover them via my blog but also through ateliers visits that I will organise for you.
