Janaina Milheiro Feather Artist

Janaina Milheiro Feather Artist

A few years ago at a textile exhibit opening, I overheard a guest ask the artist about her woven piece "What is it for?". Stunned by the question, the artist finally replied "It's to make you dream".

Visiting the atelier of textile artist designer Janaina Milheiro during our September Paris trip, I could not help but think "It's to make me dream".

Dream...

Located in the 13th arrondissement, in a modern, brutalist architecture building, Janaina's atelier is an enchanted world of feathers.

Pure white or spekled, natural or sculpted, dyed or plain, they abound on shelves, in jars, on boards, dangling from invisible threads, gathered in boxes.

Referencing her textile design background, Janaina treats feathers just as she would textile.

Embroidery, weaving, lace making, pearling, handsewing techniques are applied to feathers to create other worldly pieces.

For visual impact feathers have to be used in copious amount, conveying feelings of opulence, luxurious abundance and abandonment. We forget our daily miseries and our mind takes flight at the sight of ethereal wings, glistening plastrons, romantic capes and respledent crowns.

Janaina also works her magic with decor and objets embelishment. We witnessed the creation of Guerlain's christmas window - and so wished we were back in Paris in December to experience it.

Hermes, Valentino, Cartier, Talbot Runhof and many more in the world of haute couture, rely on her magic to make us dream.

At the end of our visit, all 10 of us left Janaina's atelier feeling the grace and the poetry of her art.

Join me on my travels as I go in search of extraordinary artists. My next trip will take me to New York, April 17th to 20th. Jewelry designers' ateliers, private tour of museum collections, elegant dinners and sinful shopping are on the menu.  See the full itinerary and email me at boutique@ruepigalle.ca if you wish to book your space.
